Thank you!
It is indeed a pleasure to greet all Hawkins County
Schools’ employees for the 2007-2008 school year. Thank you so much for
your part in helping to provide a smooth beginning for the school year. I
am pleased with the great beginning. I realize that we had a few air
conditioning problems; but, as usual, we pitched in, shared rooms, and
survived the heat. The smooth beginning would not have been possible
without all of the “behind the scenes” help and support. It truly takes a
team to make a great beginning. I wish to thank our maintenance,
transportation, food service, health service, central office staff,
teachers, administrators, custodians, and secretaries for your hard work and
dedication.
Welcome!
I wish to welcome our students to Hawkins County
Schools. I hope that each student will have a very successful year. I
would like to invite all families to visit your child’s school at least once
during the school year. Your support is so important to your child’s
success in school.
First Monday Letter
The Hawkins County Board
of Education is pleased to announce the receipt of $100,000 from the
Tennessee Department of Education, Office of Coordinated School Health.
Funds were appropriated by the Tennessee General Assembly in 2006 to expand
the Coordinated School Health initiative to all school systems in Tennessee
with passage of the Coordinated School Health Expansion and Physical
Activity Law (Public Chapter 1001).
Undoubtedly, the physical,
social, and emotional health of students can support or hinder their
academic success and their subsequent success in life. State and national
data reveal that many Tennessee students engage in unhealthy behaviors that
are detrimental to both their health and academic success. Additionally,
data indicates that school environments are not always as supportive of
students’ health as they could be. Yet, in spite of these and other
challenges, Tennessee schools can have a powerful influence on students’
wellness.
Tennessee utilizes the
Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Coordinated School Health (CSH)
model. This model uses a systematic approach to ensure that a school
community effectively links health with educational success. The eight
components of CSH are: Health Education, Physical Education,
Student/Family/Community Involvement, Health Services, Nutrition Services,
Healthy School Environment, Health Promotion for Staff, and Counseling,
Psychological and Social Services. Although these components are listed
separately, it is their composite that allows CSH to have significant
impact. CSH is implemented in a way that fits the unique needs and
resources of a school community.
While it typically takes
up to 6 years to fully implement the CSH grant, this year, Hawkins County
Schools will focus on working with the county wide CSH Advisory Council to
determine which health related programs are working well at this point, and
which programs need attention. Each school will be asked to create or
maintain an already existing healthy school team made up of teachers,
students, and parents. Healthy school teams will be responsible for
assessing individual school health needs and implementing Family Engagement
activities related to physical activity and disease prevention.
